[ THE WAY I WROTE ALL MY STARTERS AND THEN THE FLESH HAPPENED NOOOOoooo
yeah they can ignore it. diluc has been ignoring flesh for like two weeks, what is a little more...
this is a cute picture tho, diluc will smile and let shoma see before their new friends scamper off. he really has "old person with new technology vibes" here. ]
Half is still impressive. Sidon and I discussed documenting what wildlife we could find, but I wouldn't even know the names to most of these.
...Still, it's fun to look.
[ their little safari (the tesseract is missing) their little safari!! ]
[ yeah!! we all just wear horse blinders. the meerkats scurry off and shoma kind of waves goodbye to them even while he's looking at this picture. cute...again, this is endearing. ]
Well, we can start with these guys. They're called meerkats. They're a kind of mongoose, carnivorous animals. They're pretty social animals, so you're likely to find them in groups more often than you'd find them alone. [ we don't have to worry about the tesseract yet!! it's all vibes and shoma who just knows these things. ] The animals in Teyvat must be a little different. And Sidon's domain is underwater so it makes sense he wouldn't be as familiar with stuff on land.
[ also he's just happy to talk about animals that aren't rats. ]
[ diluc is taking notes on his IRIS, shoma your encyclopedic knowledge...!! ]
Mm, they are a bit different. The wildlife in the forested area [ weasels, birds, foxes, squirrels, the like ] is most familiar to me. The rest are mostly monsters.
[ he pauses for a moment, considering. ]
...I do wonder if this 'biome' will make the distinction.
[ are they gonna run into any slimes or whopperflowers...? in the meantime he's looking around for other creatures to document—mayhaps an elephant in these trying times? ]
Monsters. [ hold on. let's. wind that back a second. i mean i believe diluc should get to experience the joy of a baby elephant trotting up to him like a giant dog, so that's happening, but let's back up here. ]
What kind of monsters are we talking here? [ the answer is no though, they likely won't tell the difference. ]
[ that is. such an unhelpful answer. maybe diluc doesn't deserve the joy of a baby elephant trotting up to him like a giant dog?
sensing possible distress, ]
Don't worry, you have nothing to fear.
[ he's fully armed and powered and ready to smackdown anything that looks at shoma funny. (they will have a peaceful walk in the preservation biome it will be fine.) ]
It's not that I'm scared of the possibility. [ like. mostly he's concerned he can't just punch it because he's in a baby body. slimes are so annoying? ] I was just curious...we don't have anything like that on Earth and I've been learning a ton about other people's monsters lately.
[ slimes ARE annoying, and persistent... but yeah he's gotchu!! ]
Oh? Which ones have you seen so far?
[ ... ]
The monsters in Teyvat really are varied. Anything from small elemental spirits [ specters, annoying ] to large constructs [ ruin sentinels, also annoying ]. And of course, great beasts and drakes.
Little things...I've mostly heard stories, but sometimes those are just as bad. And after last week I don't know if I mind not seeing monsters up close yet. [ sometimes...you go on a mission and fight a big monster and almost die. and it is not fun. ]
It's weird to think that they all just live there among everybody else. Like...you can just go outside and run into stuff. Tokyo's not like that. [ well. not the aini tokyo. who knows about other tokyos, honestly. ]
...I shouldn't have said yes to it, I guess, but I did. It didn't feel right to say no and even if I had someone else would've had to go in my place and that's not fair either.
[ and meat. lots and lots of meat. ]
All the more reason people like you know how to fight, right? Probably easier to defend yourself when you know what you're doing. [ not to mention when you can just light things on fire. ] It's busy, and sometimes there's some pretty terrible stuff that happens but for the most part it's pretty peaceful. The only real monsters are the people sometimes.
[ okay edgelord. but well. it's true. people get murdered, sometimes those murderers make big plans for mass genocide, etc. ]
[ SHOMA SAID YES... I'M GONNA RATSHAKE HIM... diluc's expression doesn't show, but he thinks it's unfortunate because LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE WOULD'VE HAPPILY TAKEN HIS PLACE YEAH ]
It isn't fair either way.
[ no one should have to go through that.
but anyhow, he nods in agreement—not everyone learns how to fight, and not everyone should have to. diluc is someone who wants to, and feels he's well-suited to the task. ]
...That's unfortunate, but I understand what you mean. A beast can only act on its instincts. A person, at some point, makes a decision to shed their humanity.
[ look he's already had an argument with someone about how he could and should have said no. he knows!! but :( ]
It's not. At least this time we knew ahead of time instead of being pulled into an anomaly like before. That one was bad for other reasons. [ but nevertheless. he focuses on the second point instead, because he does think diluc understands this a little, too. ]
Exactly. With beasts you know what to expect for the most part, because their instincts only manifest in a few ways. Usually for survival. With humanity though...every now and then you think you've seen the worst of it, but then someone else can come along and surprise you. I think that's the part that's the hardest. [ ... ] Luckily right now we've stopped some terrible things from happening and terrible people have been deal with. We're in a safe and peaceful period again.

...I heard a bit about it from Keith. I'm sorry you were put through that.
[ something about fighting deranged prisoners and a giant flesh monster... ]
For better or worse. It makes travel quite arduous at times, and even the city is under threat of attack on occasion.
Is your home a peaceful place, then?
