Yeah. I think their priorities are a little too work-aligned for most people. But maybe next planet? [ maybe...music planet for kazuki. actually i'm dooming us to atlantica because that's hilarious. anyway. ]
When'd you even start playing anyway? I've never really asked. [ he does glance at his hands again, because he vaguely wonders if injury week means kazuki once again can't actually play for a while. ]
Maybe. We're still holding out for a beach, aren't we? The water park is only, like, halfway there.
[ it's not the saaaame ]
I was around twelve years old when I started playing. Went to a concert over summer break and decided then and there it was what I wanted to do. But like I said, I was on my own for years, so I only started improving for real recently.
Yeah. It's an improvement but it's almost a cop-out. [ beach!! where is our beach episode.
but he's listening, grinning slightly as kazuki explains and kind of going "yeah, that makes sense." ]
Seems to be about the age people start honing their craft, yeah. [ he says, as someone who built a whole-ass robot at 12. ] I don't think there's anything bad about working on your own for the foundation and then learning from other people. You found a mentor or something?
You'd know, right? [ with his robots. ] I think the main problem is that you can learn habits that aren't really that great, and then you have to course correct later. But as long as you're flexible, it's no big deal.
...Sort of. Akito started introducing me to some pros in the industry, so I've been working with them. Practicing in an actual studio instead of the apartment helped a lot, too - you really get to let loose that way.
Yeah. I mean I started taking stuff apart when I was six but the "putting it back together into something" part came later. Course correction's not so bad. You just have to retrain your brain a little at a time. We've all done it.
[ huh. new name. he...vaguely remembers this coming up in kazuki's memory, actually, but he decides to attempt actually asking instead of assuming things. ]
Akito must've had really good connections. You've been friends for a while? [ casually. ] I would imagine having proper equipment and the right acoustics makes a huge difference. I'd probably have better results if I was working in a lab instead of my house and our yard.
Not quite... We started hanging out at the start of the school year, but he'd been composing music for a while and actually worked with a few bands already, so he already knew a bunch of people. [ nods fastly. ] The right equipment changes everything. But if this payout is real, then you should be able to get your own lab, right?
Lucky coincidence then. [ that's kind of cool to have people who actually share your interests that way. ] And a good segue for you to be doing it professionally. I'm not a musician, but it doesn't sound any easier to just fall into that kind of thing than it does my stuff. [ there's a frown when it comes to the payout though. ] ...depending on how much the payout is, it's possible. But I should be saving it for when Amame gets back and keeping up with my house. College. All the practical stuff.
[ he says that, but... ] But a lab would be really, really nice.
I just got lucky and saw him working on a composition in class. If I hadn't chased him down, I'd still be on my own.
Well, yeah, I'm just saying. If it's as big as they say, there might be enough left over for something like that. [ shrugs! ] Doesn't hurt to dream big once in a while.
[ yeah that could not be him, that would require actually chasing people. but he nods along because that's still pretty good. ]
Glad it worked out. Like...seriously. It'll be a good thing to fall back into when things work out. [ because the idea of kazuki's entire version of shinjuku just getting destroyed is not an option he's considering. ] Dreaming big is one of those things that sometimes feels too big. But I guess it doesn't hurt to try. Just for the experience.
Some people do say it's the little things that help. Everybody's motivation is different, so...maybe it's not bad to talk to people more about theirs and keep them focused. We're far enough in now that I don't want to let people fall behind.
[ they don't have to acknowledge the "when" for kazuki, just like they don't have to acknowledge "if" for shoma. they can just focus on the overall picture. ]
...that same idea's actually why I've been spending a lot of time here. I've been...researching stuff for a personal project. I don't know if I'll have as many resources at home, so I'm trying to absorb what I can.
Somehow I figured you'd get it. Scien told me to expand my horizons last week and I had to tell him I beat him to it. [ he pauses though to look at the book in his lap, muffling another cough in his shoulder and letting rust be caught there instead. ]
I'm looking for a way to reverse things. Or at least fix them. There's a lot of scary data out there, but some of it might be useful if I pursue certain options.
I've just been asking everyone about music from their worlds... It's really interesting to see how different it all is, but somehow still similar. And just searching the database always comes up with something new, too.
[ he probably has like a hundred playlists already tbh. ]
Reverse things. Like what happened to you, or everyone who died here...?
You should show me sometime. I haven't spent a lot of time over there, but I may as well start finding some new background music for while I'm working or studying.
[ but he shrugs. ] The latter was always going to be a priority. I'm thinking about that all the time. But I meant the former in this particular case.
Yeah? What kind of music do you like for that? I can make you a playlist.
[ everyone on this ship will have their own playlist by the end of the tour ]
Kind of hard not to think about it all the time when we're in the thick of it. [ but yeah, he nods. ] Come up with anything yet? There has to be something out there that could help.
I'm sure it'll be no surprise if I say lo-fi. Lyrics are fine if I'm listening to stuff for the sake of listening to it, but usually without so I can focus on other things. [ ... ] But I should probably expand my horizons that way, too.
[ i'm glad kazuki has a personal project in playlists. ]
That's exactly it though, yeah. Anyone who's not thinking about how to get them back isn't paying attention. [ he frowns softly though. ] The obvious answer is more genetic engineering, but...I don't know how to do it myself, and the idea of letting anyone else do it freaks me out still. So I'm looking for alternatives that might be less intrusive. Even if it takes longer.
Oh yeah, that's easy mode. [ lol. ] Gimme a day or two and I'll shoot you something.
[ it's just another excuse for him to explore new music hehe. ]
Understandable. [ kazuki wouldn't want someone screwing with his dna, either, even without prior experience in it. ] I know science is the obvious answer, but have you thought about looking into the magical side of things? There are a ton of worlds out there with magic, apparently, so maybe one of them would have something that would work, too. I mean, obviously you'd know what you want better than me, but.
[ just a thought, since everyone here keeps talking about missing their magic or whatever. ]
Thanks. [ he does actually look a little curious so thank you, kazuki. he is pleased. ]
...I hadn't thought about that, no. We're not sure if we'll be able to see each other again when this is over no matter how much I want that to be true. But I wouldn't even know where to start looking when it came to magic either. Or how it'd translate. [ ... ] I'm open to options until they're too hard to consider. Does that make sense?
Yeah, no, I understand that. It's just that with everyone talking about it all the time, it's hard for me not to think about that kind of thing.
[ almost everyone's worlds are so different from his. ]
You'd think so. I'm not sure I'd understand how something like that would work if it's really like - parallel universes or whatever, but it'd be nice if we got that chance, anyway. I wouldn't mind getting to see other worlds or meeting everyone else's friends.
[ sometimes you are from normal tokyo... but he nods because yeah, that's fair and valid. ]
I mean I could actually talk about the multiverse theory if you're interested. [ it's a little bit of a joke. ] It's one of those things I've been considering lately. We've been here for a while now that we keep hearing all of these stories about places and people and...you always want to see the things that've shaped the other friends you've made. Or maybe that's just me.
[ the secret is that shoma's incredibly antisocial now but overall his curiosity's still one of his biggest personality traits and he used to like people well enough. ]
I've been wishing I could meet their friends pretty much since this started. Mistral-san knows someone who I'd definitely get along with and I really want to pick her brain about some stuff. It's not just you.
