I haven't reached out to them yet today. But last night they were just as surprised as the rest of us. [ suspicious but okay. ] The lockdown wasn't a routine check, and it wasn't triggered by any of them. Ganymede tried to enable the override but it bounced back. Europa's teleportation couldn't even break the boundaries of the barriers that blocked us in. Sounds like all eight of them were making an attempt to break through.
Bug in the system, maybe. They wouldn't be able to tell until today so they're liking running their diagnoses. I did ask if it was possible for Nut & Bolt to actually trigger a lockdown without warning but supposedly we're too far for that.
Not yet. [ an annoyed beat. ] That Sora lady was asking me about Dahut because she "encountered him a few days ago in quite a sorry state." She asked me if I knew anything about it or saw it myself.
[ and he took personal offense to that, apparently. ]
She said she doubted that you'd be forthcoming with information if you were asked. [ so. ] ...he was telling me a little about how emotions are data for Relivers and what he does at the Institute. But I don't think I realized exactly how it might process for either of you.
so fucking funny. and so scien does laugh—but it's mocking. far crueler than any other laugh he's uttered this entire time. the emotion that slides in is one that's similar to what an idiot]
She doubted I'd be forthcoming? About anything that could be helpful leading to my assistant's death? I thought too highly of her.
The most troublesome emotion is one he wouldn't have found here—and that's love. Though some are capable of inspiring certain overloads: regret, rage, despair. Anything too strong for what his memory bank was capable of.
[ listen. there's a reason he's telling scien and it's because he thinks the idea is fucking stupid! WHY WOULD A SON NOT KNOW OR WANT TO GIVE INFORMATION ABOUT HIS MOTHER TO SOLVE HIS DEATH?
the emotional feedback is pretty neutral though, even if the thought is she thinks too highly of herself anyway. ]
I doubt she even asked you before she started asking strangers. So consider this a heads up. [ ...of course it's love though. i hate that. and shoma pauses to toss that around in his head. ]
...do you think that maybe being in the same room when Luke died and feeling everyone's emotions might've dont something though? I know you just said it shouldn't have killed him, but there were apparently a lot of you.
[yea dahut was his mom and also the hamster wrangler of the ship and now there's this shitty little hamster with all his poorly functioning emotions running around]
I would say no, unless his memory bank started malfunctioning after we were already asleep. He would've notified me if he wasn't feeling well, since I had tasked him with a possible evacuation of civilians when we thought that the night might've progressed to a fight. He wouldn't put others in harm's way if he thought he couldn't protect them.
But in those last few moments... who knows? Even I was more focused on checking Luke's body than on Dahut, but I fell unconscious before registering any changes in my system.
Before this, his memory bank was working as normal? No interference from the nanites or anything like that? [ there's a very short blip of exhaustion though. of course dahut wouldn't put people in harm's way if he couldn't help them. why is he even surprised anymore. ]
That's the other thing I don't get. Everyone fell unconscious at the same time, but...I doubt he died in his sleep. Otherwise somebody else probably would've, too. So what happened between the time we fell unconscious and this morning?
It probably has something to do with the locked doors, since supposedly that is part of the Senior Crew conducting their oh so expert investigation.
[at least he still has room left for sarcasm]
But yes, his memory bank and mine were both working as normal. [a beat] To a degree. He experimented on his memory bank in ways that don't align with my own.
[ the look he gives scien is enough to say he's genuinely surprised by this even though it disappears a moment later. ]
Right. Straightforward. [ okay. ] ...I think you're right that the locked doors have something to do with this. But then the next question is "how did the doors get open, and what would cause Dahut to leave?"
[ because. like. there are three places blocked off and none of them are the observation deck. ]
[ ...he catches that stray thought and yeah, that does track with what he's gathered about the two of them. ]
Which means that something could have easily still overwhelmed him. [ there's a pause. ] If asking these questions now isn't helpful, I get it. But I want to go into tomorrow as prepared as possible when we inevitably have to figure things out ourselves.
I only expect I will have to answer them again tomorrow, as the person who knew Dahut before arriving.
I have my own questions... but I don't think anything but an autopsy and investigation I conduct myself will be enough.
[it's nothing against shoma, it's just... if there's nothing to report about the ship, scien doesn't expect anyone but whoever did the damn thing to give him answers]
...no, I get that. [ un...for...tunately. the vibe is that he gets that a little too deeply, and it's why he pauses for a moment before he takes a step back and nods. ]
If I hear anything else before then, you'll be the first to know. And if I get a response from the crew, you'll know.
"amalthea's written up an explanation that i'm going to share with you - sorry, we're in and out as we try to figure out what the hell is going on. the shields are up until tomorrow, either because we've gotten an answer of what happened to dahut or because we're going to be roping in you guys. io's going to be trying to figure out what happened to mr. pearce, because his death happened before we were all unconscious and dahut's was after. we don't have a protocol for this so we're flying by the seat of our pants right now.
Normally, Nut & Bolt ships will start a lockdown to scan for abnormalities during a lengthy space jump. Abnormalities are rare, but scans are necessary. The lockdown itself keeps certain features online, some stay offline to siphon energy to necessary parts. Lockdown lasts until the morning of the next day and can be prolonged with full permissions.
The one we had experienced is not the norm. It was unscheduled and we did not make a space jump. Through deduction, it means that it was a malfunction or that there was an abnormality found within the ship.
While we were stuck in different areas without communication, we attempted an override command, but it had failed. It would seem that two met their demise sometime between the lockdown and when we all woke up from being incapacitated. It is normally meant to sedate the threat. Senior crew are incapacitated later and wake earlier than junior crew, so they are expected to incarcerate or expel it.
For now, we have ejected everyone who had stayed in suspicious areas, then locked those areas to preserve the scene with cryofreeze to investigate later. The shields will prevent any warmth or heat from interacting with anything found within."
[ me just giving you this before tomorrow okay farewell. ]

"Bug". Of course they would call it a bug.
And no information as to what happened to Dahut.
[what about luke, scien]

Unless it was a few specific emotions, that wouldn't have been enough to kill him—or even put him in a state that was unfixable.

[ ... ]
What sort of emotions, you think?

His research focused on developing more advanced memory banks to allow for a wider variety of emotions to be felt without compromising the system.

Unfortunately, the first question feels as though it can only be answered by the Senior Crew after they run their diagnostics.
As for the second... It depends on how much danger he might've been able to piece together.

Do you think he'd leave an entire group of people to face some sort of danger or threat?
