Yeah, that sounds more like what I think churches are meant to be. [ it's more thoughtful than anything, but when they get to the podium he does start to flip through the prayer book nosily. ]
I didn't think this was something that would've been more familiar to you though. [ he has, in fact, kind of underestimated what it is that she's a guardian of. ]
...I guess when I saw theology and being a devoted believer on your profile I thought that just meant like as a side hobby, not that you actually lived there. [ well he feels stupid now but it's not like he actually asked either. ]
I guess what I should've asked back then was what a Fon Master was. And what the Order is. Our world's views are a little different when it comes to this stuff.
The Order of Lorelei is the world's largest religion! It was founded about 2000 years ago, when the world was saved by Yulia Jue, who made a pact with a being we call Lorelei in order to avert a great catastrophe. That's the short version, anyway.
[ she sounds like she could definitely give a long version. ]
And the Fon Master's the supreme leader of the Order, presiding over both the religion as a whole and the nation we're based in.
So Lorelei's like...a god? And Yulia Jue is a person who connected with this god to save Auldrant. I guess that makes sense why people would praise Lorelei.
So then that also means the Fon Master's like, uh, a conduit? Someone who continues spreading the word about that story. [ he squints for a second. ] Is Lorelei still around at all?
And, yeah! They don't, like, go around giving commands from on high like you'd probably picture a "god" doing? They're the aggregate sentience of the Seventh Fonon, so...
[ considering how that probably makes no sense without context, and tries to find a simpler way to word it. ] Basically, they're like the embodiment of "sound" itself! So they kind of exist everywhere, but usually not in a way that lets them talk with us directly.
[ yeah she starts talking about sentience and fonons and his expression skews to something a little more perplexed. but he doesn't ask, waiting for her to continue and taking this thought into account. ]
I see... [ that's kind of fascinating in a way his science-aligned brain can process. it's a being whose composition seems to be implemented into the planet itself, so they're always present but without being something that can directly guide the people. ] I guess that makes some sense. You can't directly influence them, but their presence keeps the world running, kind of.
But if they're the seventh then there's another six, right?
Yep! In order, they're darkness, earth, wind, water, fire, light, and sound! They're kind of like the building blocks of life? But the seventh one is special.
Yeah, sound's the one I'd expect the least. The rest are elements so it makes sense why they exist but I've never really thought of sound as a tangible concept. [ ... ] Then again your future is read by something called a Score so maybe it's not that surprising.
Yeah... The Score came from Lorelei too, and only people who can use the Seventh Fonon can read it. That's one of the things that makes the Seventh so special.
Is that not a thing everyone can just do? Or is it like...people are aligned to a certain Fonon and that's it? I know there are worlds where you're more specialized in one element than another.
I was, in fact, wondering. [ so thank you for that. ] But the master you're a guardian for is someone who can use the Seventh, I take it. Have you and Guy learned how to use any of the other six?
[ he's asking all of this but he is doing a little lap around the church to be nosy. ]
Makes enough sense if it's rare. [ thinking... ] Darkness and light then. I guess that actually makes a little sense, but it must've taken a lot of training to learn to use two of them. What does Guy do then if he's not a fonist?
[ he's been wondering for a while how the two of them really ended up traveling together when every time he talks to both of them they seem very different with separate experiences. ]
It did take a lot! [ thank you for noticing. ] Most people can't even master one element, much less two. And it takes a mega-genius to learn more than that!
As for Guy, he's a super-talented swordsman! And a bit of a fontech maniac on the side.
[ he meant it when he said anise is impressive, and now he has more reason to think so. ]
And I'm guessing mega-geniuses are also rare. Two's a pretty good start though. [ but that's...huh. ] He told me a little about fontech, but that explains some things. Making up strengths in other ways.
Trust me, I'm not gonna be the one to tell him you were actually nice to him for a bit. Sounds like the kind of thing that should be kept a secret anyway. [ also, it's funny. ]

I'm a Fon Master Guardian, which makes me an attendant to the most important person in the whole Order!

So, only special people like that can be healers or Scorers. Me and Guy are in the "ordinary" camp, if you were wondering.

And me... I learned how to use the First and the Sixth. Guy isn't a fonist, so that stuff isn't really his specialty.

Don't tell him I was praising him this much, though -- it might go to his head.
