[ the look on his face seems to indicate that he also finds this a little familiar. ]
Yeah, it's a little harder to look away from murder. Justified or not. [ this is a little bitter, but. also wow. you know who else has a mother and a baby sibling that got left behind because of jail? wow!!!
he hates it here. ]
...is that just another part of your job, Shu? Or was this more of a side mission?
[ loving both of them sat here like haha wow death is trauma. ]
… [ he nods. ] It’s illegal, so we don’t talk about it much. But sometimes there are people that manage to do things far worse without anyone dying.
[ he’s seen it, during jobs after all. they’ve all seen the messed up things people can do. ]
Edie was the job. His family were being stalked and tailed by the guy he wanted to kill. [ the sentiment was real though. killing takes a lot out of a person. it’s why he doesn’t like the fact people are having their hands tied and moved to kill without their control, here on this ship. ] The job can be anything, but keeping an eye on him was the job. But Limbo’s known him a while. He’s the one who stuck his nose in and got us keeping an eye on him anyway.
[ thinks a lot about shu pulling a gun on someone in front of the police station because of edie in that route. (shu voice) it’s not like i shot it. ]
[ he frowns as shu explains, but mostly because he really can see why this kid wanted to commit a murder. you protect and get revenge for what's yours. ]
So sort of like babysitting but way more intense. [ light. ] ...he was lucky to have you guys watching his back. It's worse if someone has to go through these things alone, or they don't have someone to try and de-escalate things like that.
He probably didn't. [ pointblank. ] But he will when he's older, if he hasn't already without saying so. Support's a pretty hard thing to accept when you aren't used to it and you feel like you don't have an option. So...I guess what I'm saying is it's a good thing he has that and that you guys bothered.
[ he opens his mouth to reply, but instead they both get clocked in the face by something else. you're familiar, it's fine, but for the sake of the memory and because i don't want to have him explain bibi, bibi is not visible to shu and her dialogue seems to be coming from mizuki. the conversation between mizuki and ryuki/date when they talk isn't important, and aiba and tama can't be heard by shu. whee. ]
the amount of context he's lacking is wild and he doesn't know the half of it. but there's enough there to understand -- shoma's dad was murdered, and his sister is on the suspect list for... something. even just for questioning. ]
... What happened to her? She was going to go with them.
[ same. anyway he just...stares for a moment before he frowns to himself. ]
...she went with them and they talked. She gave them the information and...she told them the truth. [ a pause. ] The police are holding her at the detention center right now until her case can be heard. Her lawyer thinks her sentence might be lessened because of the circumstances. That was about a week or so before we got here.
geez. it's not what he would've liked to hear, but he can't feel surprised either. something about the way the conversation had gone, shoma causally admitting he was willing to thermite the guy who killed his father. is it so surprising the other sibling would've done the same? ]
Sounds like this Tearer was someone no one would be sad to see gone. Maybe they will get her a lighter sentence, with the right lawyer and some sympathy deals.
[ shoma's sister would be the kind of case limbo would bend over backwards to take. ]
What about you-- with your sister gone, what was happening to you?
He was a serial killer. [ just flatly admitting this. ] And he had a plan for destroying the entire infrastructure of Japan, or even the whole world. He killed a few people six years ago, and then the case was reopened recently because...well. [ because amame killed him, but whatever. ] You can see why. ...she says she has no regrets for doing it, but I don't know what's going to happen now either.
[ but yeah. there's that. ]
I'm...figuring out what to do next. College is probably off the table right now because it's expensive and she'll need my help. So...what's next is probably going back to school. I'm pretty close to graduating, so at least then I can try to find a job, maybe, and keep things going until she's released. [ ... ] Being here's given me a little more time to think about it.
... I don't think I'd have any regrets either. [ there sure is... something in his voice that suggests he might undersand a little better than someone just saying platitudes would. ] And if he was planning potential worldwide terrorism, then yeah, she'll probably get a good deal.
[
... hm. hold on. ]
Graduating? [ ... College? ] Doesn't your profile say you're 12?
I hope so. [ ... ] She's my sister and obviously I'm gonna protect her and I'm not gonna deny I wasn't planning the same thing. But obviously I'm sad about it and I'm trying to think of the best route now. Not like I have a ton of influence on the law or anything.
[
yeah. see. he should be a little more leery of sharing this, but a.) it's already out there and b.) he does trust shu. so he just shrugs softly. ]
...my profile does say that, yes. [ and he waits just to see what shu says. who knows. maybe he'll think he's just a very smart 12 year old genius (no.) ]
No... but it looks like you have people in the law who care about you. That's something, at least.
[ ....
hm. ] ... I know you're smart, but there's a lot of reasons I think they'd hesitate letting a pre-teen skip all of highschool. [ ... ] How old are you, Shoma?
That's something. [ he knows. there's something to be said about support systems, he thinks. but there's a little lopsided smirk because it's funny to think about. ]
You're right though. I don't know if I would've taken that option if it was offered anyway. [ school was already bad enough, why would he skip ahead to face the same problems?? ] ...eighteen. I was in my third year of high school until recently.
[ huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh. thinks about people treating shoma like he's 12 and shu also just takes a moment to mentally stare at the ceiling for a moment. ]
... I'm trying to ask the obvious without hitting a nerve, give me a moment.
Oh. [ he seems surprised by this show of sensitivity (?), actually. ] Um. Thanks.
...[ truly, because it's one thing to tell people, and it's another to go into the details. so he seems to be thinking and just. reaches around shu for a moment to pour himself some coffee. ]
The easy, straightforward answer is genetic engineering. My body's always going to look like this now no matter how old I am.
[ he tilts his head. which is probably shu for "any time". ]
...
[ please understand he's been exposed to magic, eikons, wizards, superheroes and now genetic engineering. it's been a week so far. (icly, it's monday ]
Genetic engineering. How the heck did you get wrapped up in genetic engineering?
[ yeah happy memshare. but that question makes him go quiet again for a bit. ]
Um. [ he has shared this with a few people here both via this week and of his own volition but he still feels weird about explaining it. ] ...when I was in elementary school, something on one of my health checkups came back as abnormal so I was sent to an institute that studied DNA and genome therapy. They told me there was something really wrong with my genes that could only be fixed with therapy. So I started. I found out later it was all a lie. They were just using me for human experimentation and rewriting my genetic code to try and find the perfect combination to achieve immortality.

Kids from Edie's neck of the woods grow up to fast. They don't really have a choice, but-- he's got a network now, either way.
